Besides yourself which is the subject you know best: fashion or/and illustration?

I can't say how much I know about it, but fashion is the subject I love best.

Are there other similarities among you and Frida Kahlo apart from "the subject you know best"?

We also both "paint" our "own reality".

I took a lot of good advices from her!

I wish I could wear flowers on my head every day, but that's her prerogative.

You were born and bread online but is it the European or the US side of the line?

That's the beauty of online: space is a redefined concept.

Does Lula attend fashion shows, openings etc. incognito or what?

Oh, I loove fashion shows.I loove openings. But most of all I like to think back at it when it's quiet and "recollect emotions".

What about Herself magazine. Could MC have some exclusive information before it airs?

Herself is a all illustrated magazine, celebrating fashion and its icons. We are deeply fascinated by the notion of time and two of its declinations strictly linked to fashion: speed and foreverness. And we love women with character: amongst the others, it was amazing to feature the gorgeous Greek Goddess Athena.

She is the goddess of cities and conveys a powerful personality we really look up to. We are big fans of Classics.

Would you ever unveil your human identity?

Never say never...

You have worn and wear always the next best thing. Which are this season's must haves in let's say 3 basic outfits?

3 things Im surely getting:

Great underwear: there is a lot of transparency.

Beauty products for not much make up: there are so many beautiful prints.

Striking necklaces: to wear on top of all buttoned shirts.

Which are the highlights of your career?

Having the feeling the the best is yet to come.

If you were not a illustrated fashion character what would you be?

A Disney princess.

How do you spend your free time?

I don't have free time really. Reading, sleeping, eating are all moment of inspiration that I translate into work.

Are there any hobbies?

I'm bad at hobbies. I'm fulfilled with my creative work, whatever is outside of it is the boring part.

The world of fashion is sometimes a weird one. The web-sphere can be, perhaps, even weirder. Densely populated by fantastical characters (and/or creatures), both worlds never cease to amaze, intermingle and cause a great deal of confusion. This modern, mystical marriage gave birth to Lula, weird, fantastical, confusing – an illustrated girl, no less. The prodigal offspring started as out as a simple sketch before moving to the digital realm, gaining feathers, leathers, silks and high-heels. Before the world could say Prada, TheSubjectIKnowBest, the blog where she parades her infinite, drool-worthy wardrobe and shares whimsical conversations with an A-list of powerful friends that could drag any industry mogul to shame, became a cult pit-stop for fashion lovers, already snatching collaborations with Swide (Dolce & Gabbana’s blogzine) and Vogue Japan.

But the once-upon-a-time illustrated love story doen’t stop here for Lula. The next venture for fashion’ next superhero is a print one, where Lula fills in the shoes of editor-in-chief or HERSELF, a magazine where everything, even the ads, is illustrated. Featuring in-depth interviews with the likes of Maria Callas, Jackie Kennedy, Audrey Hepburn and Imelda Marcos – as well as portraits (and self-portraits) of dear buddies Frida Kahlo, Anna Dello Russo, Michelle Obama, Marie Antoinette, Grace Kelly, Diana Vreeland and even Barbie and Cinderella, HERSELF is all about posing questions and giving free reign to imagination, not a place for fashion solutions and suggestions. Like any good hero though, Lula is surrounded in mystery. Is she real, or is she ‘just’ a sketch? Is she the fashion answer for Superman and who is the Clark Kent behind her alter ego? We catch up with the girl who best describes herself through the words of Jessica Rabbit: “I’m not bad. I’m just drawn that way”.

Dazed Digital: What is the ethos of HERSELF?

Lula: We celebrate the bold the beautiful, the infinity and beyond. We celebrate Fashion, its designers, brands, icons and their staggering work. In Ourself We Trust. Way to go.

DD: How did you prepare for the herculean task of making a magazine?
Lula: I didn't. I could never do something I fully understand: where would the surprise be? How could I be wrong then? How could I find a new path if not by loosing my way?

DD: Why print? And why now?
Lula: Why only digital? Why not now? I was born online, but for HERSELF, we felt that, wherever we want to go, we must start from paper. It's very prestigious, now more than ever.

DD: What are your personal definitions of: possible, impossible, creativity and the web?
Lula: I guess both creativity and the web are the sensational co-existence of possible and impossible.

DD: Who are your legends and heroes?
Lula: Amongst many: myself aged six. I always try to be like her: a hard believer with boundless imagination.

DD: Why a portrait issue?
Lula: I think the unconditional love for oneself, makes one think that when looking at someone else's beautiful portrait, one is staring in a mirror...

DD: What do you see when you look in the mirror, and what does the mirror see when it looks back at you?
Lula: I look in the mirror and ask "Who's the fairest of them all?". The mirror goes "Snow White". So I think, I'd better be a gorgeous illustration...

DD: What is the connection between Anna dello Russo, Frida Kahlo, Jessica Rabbit, Maria Callas, Jackie Kennedy, Cinderella and the greek goddess Athena?
Lula: It might look like they belong from different worlds: cherry hats, iconic mono-eyebrow, bombastic breast, divine voice, pink Chanel suit, crystal shoes, superpower... But they all are their very own self and it's a rare thing. They posses in-confutable style and express themselves with paradoxes of such frivolity and wisdom that never fail to awake everyone's imagination.

DD: And why did you launch a collection of silk scarves alongside the magazine? What's the story behind it? Please tell me more about your pet leopard...
Lula: We love paper. We worship paper. But who can resist silk? The collection consists of seven silk scarves: they are made in Italy (Como), set in the jungle and feature our leopard pet Tancredi. He has a wild heart, but behave exquisitely well. He was elegantly playing around all these jungles created for the Portrait Issue...a black and white frame came to mind and there was no place on earth better than a square of silk to capture this moment.

DD: How did you come up with all this crazily brilliant/brilliantly crazy concept behind Lula, TheSubjectIKnowBest, HERSELF...? Or even, where did it all come from?
Lula: At this point you must know I'm very close friend with the gorgeous Frida Kahlo, someone very associable both with brilliance and craziness. I'd wear flowers on my head too, but I really don't wanna copy her signature style. Like her, I always draw myself (because I'm the subject I know best).

Like her I don't paint (draw) my dreams or nightmares...I paint(draw) my own reality. So The Subject I Know Best is my time, a white space functioning as a diary, a pad, a digital mirror, with the great excitement of being online.
HERSELF is the wonderful world where, together with Thorbjorn and Fabio, I feature the illustrated fashion reality as perceived in an illustrated world. It's made of association, synesthetic imagery, and always the very latest fashion.

DD: This can almost start a philosophical debate: are you real? Are you really Lula? Is Lula yourself? Is Lula HERSELF? Is HERSELF yourself? Who is HERSELF?
Lula: Let's cut it then, with philosophical elegance: I'm an illustrated girl, running on high heels and never forgetting to apply black mascara whose soul lies in the world of HERSELF where its chaos...gives birth to a dancing star. (I had to borrow from my friend Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche for this one...)

DD: Do you follow your dreams, stalk your dreams, or chase your dreams?
Lula: My dreams and I are inseparable, bounded to the core, consumed by love. I live for them.I'm dedicated, faithful, honest. My profound commitment is proved by arguing and fighting with them. Pushing them away, pulling them back, thinking weather they are really what I want, making them jealous at times. They tear me apart, make me wonder, but they are always there for me with such strenght. They are the ones!

DD: Do you want to change the way that illustration is perceived?
Lula: I have changed the way I perceive it. It's not strictly for decoration or explication . It's not only design at its birth. Its the ultimate ticket to everywhere.

DD: Peter Pan never wanted to grow older, Pinocchio was a wooden boy that wanted to be real, Ariel was a mermaid that wanted to belong in the human world, Lula wants to belong in the fantasy world...is there a pattern here? Did you get all you wished for?
Lula: I'm not even half way! I don't have a lamp, or a wand. My shoes are Alaia, Louboutin, Givenchy, not crystal. My wish list is still full of un-thicked boxes.

DD: What are the future plans for HERSELF? And what is the future of traditional media?
Lula: HERSELF has a million plans, using different media, keeping exploring, translating everything into everything. The "Like" button is a blue version of Caesar's thumbs up.
I think traditional media still has a long life because it can feed the new, like the new will always count on traditional, creating each other and us. The web is the best possible place to celebrate traditional media and... they'll live happily ever after!

Along with ventures like Style.com/print, HERSELF is an example of a digital project gone back to print. Why did you think a print outlet was necessary?

I don't feel we've gone back to print,

I feel we've gone forward to print.

The question was: how do we want our pages to be significant in a digital world?

HERSELF magazine is our answer.

Could you please describe the process of putting the magazine together?

We prepare for the magazine like we prepare for dinner: who do we invite? what shall we cook? who sits next to who? what's for dessert?

Will you let other contributors joining you in the next issue?

One way or another, everybody is contributing. Our ideas are the result of so many influences from everywhere!

What are your plans for the magazine?

The infinity and beyond, we love that line.

Do you agree that the interaction between fashion and illustration is getting stronger and stronger?

If, yes, why?
Most dresses, shoes, jewels are a drawings before being dresses, shoes, jewels. Most things are illustrated before being real: that's the essence of design.

You've created a Silk Scarves collection which will be sold at Matches and from HERSELF/Shop. How did you come up with this idea?
What was your inspiration?

We had these beautiful jungles: leaves, exotic flowers, palms...and our little leopard, Tancredi, was playing around them and we though to capture the image on silk.We consider the scarf the most iconic accessory and the one that works best for us: it's a canvas were our creativity can be expressed; then worn.

The leave motif is a reminiscence of Rousseau's Tropical Jungles, whilst we named our pet after the character from the italian novel "The Leopard".The book is certainly not about a big cat, but is an exquisite read, famously know for stating the importance of changes to keep being on top.

Lula is not a stranger in the Fashion World. Especially for those familiar with its internet side, Lula's www.thesubjectiknowbest.com has become so popular that she decided to launch a all illustrated fashion publication , HERSELF magazine. Lula was created in a virtual world, but she can count on good friends: from Frida Kahlo to Barbie and Kate Moss. Radikal finds out more.

How was Lula born?

I was born as a sketch and got here with some digital restyle. It's been a great ride and I got to wear amazing pieces, research beautiful images and have done some extraordinary encounters...

As your followers we often observe Lula 'becoming' or 'impersonating' fashionistas like Carine Roitfeld, Anna Dello Russo or Rachel Zoe... Who are your ultimate style icons?

With "Exploring Aesthetics", I always get the chance to wear the looks not only of my favourites but also of women with tremendous style that is not necessarily my own...My ultimate Style Icon?My good friend Frida Kahlo, both for her playful taste in colour, fierce personality and surreal creativity.

Which are your favorite collections in this season?

I loved Givenchy's cuts, Carven's daywear, McQueen's laces, YSL shoes,Calvin Klein Collection's simplicity, Nina Ricci sweetness, Jil Sander's clever solutions.

Do U support collebrations like H&M and Versace,mixing mass market and luxury?

I love such collaborations. It's an open exchange of methods, an interactive process and a symbol of contemporary culture.

Since you are born on digital world,what made you to switch to published publication and create HERSELF magazine?

I love my digital world and I belong to it, but paper will always be paper and a magazine will always have its prestige.

I love the idea of showing my world trough flicking pages...

In the very first issue, why is Kate Moss is on the cover?

We wanted to express at its fullest the key notion of the magazine: FASHION.

The answer to our question "Who shall we cast?" came effortlessly by itself.

How did you come with the idea of styling Frida,Barbie and Anna Wintour in the very first issue?

Because they are gorgeous and inspiring and the vision we have of them should never be predictable.

Actually, the very key message HERSELF conveys is that the vision we have of the world should never be predictable...

Since you're wearing Hakaan,Erdem and Hussein Chalayan, who's your favorite Turkish designer? Do U think that Turksh designers has a future like Antwerb 6?

At the moment I love Hakaan very much.I wore a lot of his mini dresses, the cuts are impeccable. I think turkish designer are already part of great fashion, have left and will leave their mark.

We know that Lula often travels. Will we ever see on streets of Istanbul or in Istanbul Fashion Week?

Of course! Plus, Turkish colours, patterns, geometries, and shapes are so wonderfully inspiring!

HERSELF, the brand, has many different forms but all of them illustrated. Primarily it is a bi-annual illustrated magazine that launched this year, bringing with it a fantastic range of scarves, available exclusively at Matches. HERSELF’s Editor and Creative Director Lula is even an illustrated character. Below is the transcript of our last chat with Lula and also some fabulous images she has sent us of herself dressed in Matches.

Describe Herself as a brand in your own words?

The most simple thing to say is that Herself is an illustrated world that celebrates art, beauty, fashion and the works of designers regardless of time and space. We celebrate the single items of each season and mix it with our surreal world of illustration.

How did the idea of scarves come about, why not something else?

It’s an iconic accessory but also it’s a square of silk that starts as a white space and we can fill with our drawings. We wanted it to be commercial and wearable but also to use it as a blank canvas and creative space.

Any plans to add to the collection?

We have tonnes of ideas but the scarves fit with what we wanted to say now. We plan to add other ideas that translate our work, whether that’s accessories, animation or whatever. We don’t want to rush it though.

What’s the biggest inspiration for Herself?

With the scarves it is the jungle. Nature looks glorious and is so precious and elegant and there is nothing shinier than leaves and flowers. We also feel very passionate about the black and white lines that frame each scarf – a frame makes everything look classy, it’s primitive and it works.

Tell us about Tancredi the aristocratic leopard?

What is more iconic than the leopard print? Nothing. We really feel deeply about it. Tancredi, our leopard is so sophisticated. There is an Italian novel called The Leopard by Giuseppe Tomasi di Lampedusa and we took the name Tancredi from that. In some scarves he is silver and some he is gold. He appears in every scarf either in his kaleidoscopic self or whole – not many leopards can say that about themselves.

What is your favourite way to wear a scarf?

I like them tied around my bag but my favourite way is triangular on the neck. The great thing about Herself is that every corner of the scarf has a different print, if you fold it differently you see a different design (either an illustration or black and white) – I love to play with that.

What does a Herself girl like you do for kicks?

My work is very fulfilling. The best part of my work is research, meeting all the different people and finding the stuff that is inspiring. I like a good read and flicking through magazines and watching documentaries.

1-Recently, on an interview, you have been defined "Cartoon Fashion Icon". Do you like to be described that way?

I like to be drawn that way.

2-How important is for Lula to follow her dreams?

I follow them wearing very high heels: it takes longer to get there, but it's so worth it...

3-Visiting your website one can spend hours. Beside being funny, Lula is a very charming character. What do you think is the winning element of Lula?

I guess I'm not rushing to say everything and to say it now.

4-How do you choose what to wear? Are you difficult to please?

I choose what to wear by following my instinct and always being difficult to please.

5-Lula is born on the web.Can you tell us about your path?

"I'm sketched, scanned and digitally restyled".Once online everything is possible.I'm very proud and thankful for the attentions received, but my path is just at its beginning.

6-We know about your collaborations with Swide.com (Dolce&Gabbana's blogazine) and Vogue japan. What are your plan for the future?

Thousands.But above all HERSELF magazine, its world, its travel and research and the work it requires.

7-What is HERSELF and how does it come about?

HERSELF ia s all illustrated biannual fashion publication of wich I'm the Editor&Creative director.

I've met and interviewed incredible women, chose garments from the very Best Of The Season, opened the doors to a part of my world that it's not shown on my website The Subject I know Best. It's 3 of us working behind it and already working on Issue two, out next March.

Herself is born from the will to celebrate the wonders of fashion, designers creations, inspiring icons in a world where, if not every thing, at least everybody is possible.

8-Is there something Lula can't live without?

Photoshop, my mac, my Wacom tablet and my YSL mascara.

9-Anything Lula can't stand?

Homologation.

10-Wich ones are Lula's favourite brands?

Fashion illustrations tend to have two distinct roles- either sketches or images to accompany text. Lula, through her passion, talent and forward looking vein has challenged this perception and created a whole magazine based on illustrations.
Who is Lula? A good friend of Swide, Lula lives for fashion. Lula’s talent has been showcased on her blog, The Subject I know Best. Lula is a lucky lady, as she gets to sport the latest looks from the catwalk day in day out. An enviable figure, big doe eyes and an infinite wardrobe make her a girl’s best friend and enemy. But Lula is a drawing, and shares her philosophy with another notorious cartoon lady, Jessica Rabbit: “I’m not bad, I’m just drawn this way”.

Lula’s latest project is in many ways revolutionary. HERSELF Magazine is a new form of fashion publication where everything, from the fashion shoots to the adverts is illustrated. The first issue, Portraits, features some of fashion’s most well known heroines, as well as cartoon favourites and an Olympus celebrity. The unconstrained imagination, innovation and freedom of expression which are exercised through the magazine are a true reflection of the future, even if on traditional media.

1-How did the Herself project start?

Time and space have been redefined lately.

So we have redefined our personal world, found it immensely inspiring and decided to share it on paper.
It's a celebration: of brands we love, faces and things that fascinate us, questions we ask, things we know,things we wonder.
I'm born on a withe sheet of paper, before being digitally restyled.
It felt good to lend on a page again and bring my own reality there.

2-Is an “illustrated” magazine a way for you to comment on the current state

of the fashion press?

More than commenting on it, it is interacting with it, being it.

HERSELF is about questions and imagination, not suggestions and solutions.

3-How would you describe your illustrations?

4-How come you decided to center the first issue on portraits?

...because for some twisted reason when you look at someonelse's beautiful portrait you are led to believe you are looking in a mirror.

Take a walk at the London's National portrait gallery, you'll come out feeling you have reign on a country, won battles, won prices, live forever celebrated by others!

5-What criteria did you use to determine the icons to feature?

Follow my heart.

6-Why the Disney cartoons and Pallas Athena?

Ariel, Snow White, Cinderella, Belle, Jasmine, Pochaontas, are extraordinary women! They know what they want, the follow their dreams, they believe in love, they allow us to believe in happy endings, they compromise, they are brave and let's face it, they are forever beautiful.

The goddess Athena is extremely inspirational as well:she's very brainy, intelligent, focused.We all wish we were goddess, know it better, do it best. Plus...the flat image of her conveyed by ancient vases is so elegant, minimal. 1D yet so contemporary...

7-How did the idea of illustrate the ads as well come about?

Herself it's a all-illustrated world.Simple as that.

8-What kind of business model do you have?

Madonna!She is featured on page 82.We love her.

9-Which is your favourite feature from the first issue?

Two of them: "The Portrait Issue" set in the jungle.I had a wonderful time with these gorgeous women.Their personalities are so compelling, it was fun to play with their style. It's a gorgeous casting.
And "I-am Self Portrait with words": Anna, Giovanna, Mary, Mira, Delfina and Margherita portraying themselves with their very own words!
Wow!

I always quote my friend Jessica (Rabbit ) "...I'm just drawn this way".But even if it's drawn, my personality is not born as the result of planning.It's my and the other's ever changing taste building it every day.

I was checking Anna Dello Russo's blog when I first saw you in all your different looks!I don't know your past: how is Lula born?

I was born and bread online.Take another friend of mine:Ariel, the little mermaid, a dreamy and determined woman: she strongly wanted to belong to the human world, I strongly wanted to belong to the fantasy one.

It's all about never lose focus of what you love.

How did you gain fame?

The Web is like a magic genius, my first wish of the three given has become reality:to be here.

Everything and everyone I met in the way, made me a bit more "Lula".

What are your future plans?

Many! creating HERSELF magazine has led me to places I never thought I would reach.I'm working already on Issue two. Issue One-The portrait Issue was a fantastic experience to meet intricate personalities like...Madonna, Elisabeth I, Botticelli's Venus.

How did you come up with this, well, fantastic idea?

I'm made of all the magazine and books I have read and read again: a world in pixel is fantastic, but nothing beats the prestige of paper and pages.

What shows did you most enjoy in Milan and Paris, for this last spring summer season?

In Milan: Jil Sander, Missoni, Dolce&Gabbana and Prada.

In Paris:Givenchy,Ackermann,Vaccarello, McQueen.

You are a very amusing web personality...do you have limits?

Oh yes, a very common one expecially: it takes me so long to get ready...

What are your must have?

My mac, my Wacom tablet, a pile of books, my beauty products, Fiji water.

How would you describe your style?

"Never say never". I don't wanna belong to any category, but celebrate single pieces,behind which there is so much work, research and passion.

Your weekly "Exploring Aesthetics" is world-widely loved: how would you describe it?

Its name is very self explanatory:wearing other people's clothes is a beautiful catharsis. To copy is the first step to learn; my friend Pablo (Picasso) suggest not to even copy...but steal! So I do steal, and when the post is over I hand back everything to the original owner.I love dressing up...for Cindy (Sherman) is an art, for me, at the moment, its' just an exercise. A style exercise!

This is HERSELF magazine, the All-Illustrated biannual fashion publication, OUT NOW. In collaboration with London's Studio ANNUAL, I have been working on it in the past months, travelling the web and the earth in search of whole new worlds.

High from my heels (so often by Alaia), I have encountered the most incredible woman, selected unbelievably beautiful pieces, spoken with legends, met my heroes.

I have been looking for the meaning of details, got lost in the jungle, found ancient icons, spotted a fine red thread, talked to ladies the word beyond was created for.

To welcome HERSELF Issue One- The Portrait Issue and its illustrated world, six talented, elegant and very inspiring women known as Anna Dello Russo, Giovanna Battaglia, Miroslava Duma, Mary Katrantzou, Delfina Delettrez and Margherita Missoni have handed us their own Self-Portrait, painted with their very own words!

In a dream world everything is possible, yet the fashion was worth keeping real.Hope you'll enjoy the read as much as I have enjoyed the ride.
